Make sense of the numbers that matter

Finance is not simply the language of accountants. It is one of the clearest ways a board can understand how an organisation is performing, where it is heading, and whether its strategy is financially sustainable. Profitability, cash flow, investment, funding, and financial resilience can all have a direct bearing on the choices a board makes.

For NEDs, understanding finance means being able to connect financial information with the wider business. It means recognising how financial decisions can create opportunities or constraints, and understanding the implications for strategy, growth, risk, and long-term value.

Build the financial literacy to understand how money flows through an organisation, how financial decisions shape strategy, and what the board needs to consider when looking ahead.

Challenge financial decisions with confidence, without needing to be an accountant

Boards are presented with financial reports, budgets, forecasts, investment proposals, and performance data, but effective oversight depends on what happens next. NEDs need to know which questions to ask, whether management's assumptions stand up to scrutiny, and when a financial issue warrants further investigation or challenge.

The Board-Level Finance module focuses on developing that practical boardroom capability. You will explore how to interrogate financial information, identify warning signs, understand financial risk, and challenge decisions without getting lost in unnecessary technical detail.

Delivered as part of the Certified Non-Executive Director Qualification, this module can now also be purchased individually, giving you the flexibility to develop a specific area of your boardroom capability without committing to the full qualification.

Develop the knowledge to scrutinise financial performance, challenge financial assumptions, and provide effective oversight of the organisation's financial health and long-term sustainability.
